Five tools to help control versioning of designs

Git and bitbucket manage program code, but many people manage design files only with folders on their PC. In this case, the design file can not be reverted to the previous version. It is inefficient to add files with the same content for each release. There, this article will introduce the design version control tools.

Advantages of version control

  • Multiple designers working on one project at the same time
  • You can go back to your previous project when you need it
  • Allow team members to confirm changes easily
  • Manage design feedback in one place per project

Of course, there are benefits for people who work alone.

But especially when working with others, you can feel the benefits of being able to version control!

List of current tools

Mainly, there are five tools out there!

  • Abstract
  • Git for Sketch plugin
  • Kactus
  • Plant
  • Folio

We will introduce the features and interface one by one easily.

Abstract

The first thing to introduce is Abstract.

What you can do

  • Version control (branch, commit changes, merge specific commits)
  • Change management (a side-by-side view of where changed)
  • File management (appears as change when a file is deleted)
  • Feedback (You can comment on the changed design, reply to the comment, etc.)
  • Work with slack etc. and receive notifications

UI

The abstract interface looks like this.

Abstract

Git for Sketch plugin

What you can do

  • Plugin, not a tool
  • Changes made to Sketch are output as png images so they can be compared
  • light
  • Based on Github
  • It is usable free
  • Use Git LFS when you want to create files of 100MB or more

UI

Git Sketch Plugin

Kactus

What you can do

  • Tool developed based on Git for Sketch plugin
  • Simple UI
  • Rather than save the Sketch file as is, create a small JSON file and make changes from it, making it lighter than traditional version control tools
  • There is a free basic plan
  • Based on Github
  • Use Git LFS if you want to create a file of 100MB or more as before

UI

Kactus

Plant

What you can do

  • UI is beautiful
  • Slightly slower than other version control tools
  • Can also be added to Sketch’s Inspector
  • There is a free basic plan (1GB, three projects, five members)
  • There is a simple tutorial

UI

Plant

Folio

What you can do

  • The viewer is free forever
  • Can clone from existing Git repository
  • Integration with Gitlab
  • Note that it is not developed now (the tool itself is quite old)

UI

Folio

What should I use after all?

At present, the easiest to use is Abstract, but this one is slightly more expensive.

The starter plan is $ 9-10 (USD) per month – (As per contributor, if there are three contributors, it will cost $ 27-30 per month). A business plan is $ 15-16.67 (USD).

If you want to get started at a lower price, Kactus is the best choice.

It costs money if you use it to some extent, but Kactus is developed initially based on Github.

So if you are a designer who is used to Github.

I think Kactus whose UI is also simple is good.

Summary

As mentioned above, we introduced a tool of version control of the design.
